The treatment

What is Spinal Fusion and Fixation?

Spinal fusion joins two or more bones of the spine so they heal into one solid bone. First, the nerves are freed by removing the bone, ligament or disc that presses on them (decompression). Then titanium screws and rods hold the spine in the right position while it fuses.

Dr. Nitish uses minimally invasive techniques where possible, to reduce muscle damage and help faster recovery.

Who needs it

  • Spinal canal stenosis with leg pain or heaviness on walking
  • Spondylolisthesis (one bone slipped over another)
  • Unstable spine after a fracture or injury
  • Spine TB or infection that has damaged the bones
  • Repeated disc slip at the same level

Step by step

How much does spinal fusion cost in Pune?

Usually about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh. It depends on the number of levels fixed, the implants used and the hospital room type. Most insurance policies cover it.

Will I be able to bend after fusion?

Yes. Fusing one or two levels has little effect on daily bending, because the rest of the spine keeps moving.

Is spinal fusion a big surgery?

It is a bigger surgery than microdiscectomy, but with modern implants and careful technique most patients walk within 1 to 2 days.

Are the screws removed later?

No. The titanium implants are safe to stay in the body for life and do not usually need removal.
