The treatment

What is Microdiscectomy?

Microdiscectomy is the most common surgery for a slipped disc (lumbar disc prolapse) and sciatica. Using a high-power operating microscope, Dr. Nitish removes only the part of the disc that has slipped out and is pressing on the nerve.

The healthy part of the disc, the bones and the muscles are kept. Because the cut is small, there is less pain after surgery, very little blood loss and a quick return to normal life.

Who needs it

  • Leg pain (sciatica) that has not improved after 6 to 8 weeks of proper treatment
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the foot or toes (foot drop)
  • MRI shows a disc pressing on a nerve root
  • Sudden loss of bladder control or severe leg weakness: this is an emergency

Is microdiscectomy safe?

Yes. It is one of the most common and well-proven spine surgeries. It is done through a small cut under a microscope, so the risk is low. Dr. Nitish explains every risk to you before you decide.

Can I avoid surgery?

Many patients can. Most slipped discs get better with medicines, physiotherapy and nerve root blocks. Surgery is suggested only when pain does not settle, or when there is weakness or nerve damage.

How much does microdiscectomy cost in Pune?

Usually about ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh, depending on the hospital and room type. It is covered by most health insurance policies.

Can the disc slip again?

It can happen in a small number of patients. Core exercises, good posture and safe lifting, taught after surgery, lower this chance.
