Understanding the problem

What is back pain?

Back pain can come from muscles, ligaments, discs, the small joints of the spine (facet joints) or the nerves. Most short-term back pain is due to a muscle strain and settles with simple care.

Pain that lasts more than 4 to 6 weeks, wakes you at night, or spreads to the leg needs a proper examination. Dr. Nitish reviews your MRI or X-ray with you and explains the cause in simple words.

Common causes

  • Muscle strain from lifting or a sudden movement
  • Long hours of sitting, poor posture and desk work
  • Slip disc or disc wear (degeneration)
  • Facet joint arthritis or spinal stenosis
  • Weak bones (osteoporosis) and spine fractures

When should I see a doctor for back pain?

If pain lasts more than 4 to 6 weeks, spreads to the leg, wakes you at night, or comes with fever, weight loss, weakness or bladder problems.

Do I need an MRI for back pain?

Not always. An MRI is useful when pain lasts long, spreads to the leg or when there are warning signs. Dr. Nitish advises it only when it will change your treatment.

Is bed rest good for back pain?

Only for a day or two. Gentle walking and staying active help the back heal faster than long bed rest.

Why does my back hurt after long sitting?

Long sitting puts extra load on the discs and tires the back muscles. Short breaks every 30 to 45 minutes, a good chair and core exercises help.
