Understanding the problem

What is neck pain and cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is wear and tear of the discs and joints in the neck. With age, and with long hours of looking down at phones and laptops, the discs lose height and small bone spurs can form.

Most people only get neck pain and stiffness. If a disc or bone spur presses on a nerve, pain and tingling spread to the arm (cervical radiculopathy). If it presses on the spinal cord, the hands become clumsy and walking becomes unsteady (cervical myelopathy), which needs early treatment.

Common causes

  • Long hours of mobile and laptop use with the head bent
  • Long two-wheeler rides with a heavy helmet
  • Carrying heavy loads on the head or shoulder
  • Age-related disc wear
  • Vitamin B12 and vitamin D deficiency

Can cervical spondylosis be cured?

The wear itself does not reverse, but the pain can be controlled very well. Most patients live normally with exercise, posture care and occasional medicines.

Is a neck collar good for neck pain?

A soft collar can help for a few days in severe pain. Using it for long weakens the neck muscles, so exercises are more important.

Why do my hands tingle with neck pain?

Tingling usually means a nerve in the neck is pressed. It needs a specialist check and sometimes an MRI.

When is neck surgery needed?

When a pressed nerve causes arm pain that does not settle, or when the spinal cord is pressed and the hands or walking are affected.
